Touhou Koumakyou New Classic Marisa Kirisame
Forest of Magic speed and firepower, paid for with a thin spread and a larger hitbox.
Playstyle
Marisa Kirisame is the ordinary magician who lives in the Forest of Magic, and she is the high-firepower option in Touhou Koumakyou New Classic. Unfocused she is clearly faster than Reimu. Focused she still moves quicker than focused Reimu, which is a gift on streaming patterns and a tax on micrododges. If you over-tap, you fly into the next knife. New Classic’s visible hitbox makes that tax honest: you can see the larger point around the ribbon on her back, and you will notice how often speed—not bullet density—kills you on Stage 5.
Her attack is a lane, not a blanket. Side fairies on Stage 1 and the wide Meiling opener ask you to move the lane onto them instead of waiting for homing. The payoff is boss health. Marisa deletes bars. Cards that bully Reimu on timer simply end. That is why she is a beginner pick as Marisa A and an Extra favorite as the same letter: you spend fewer seconds inside Flandre.
Play her from a slightly higher screen position than Reimu when you can afford it. Speed lets you reach the Point of Collection and still be under the boss before the next nonspell. Bottom-hugging wastes the only advantage she has on stage portions.
Marisa A: Magic Missiles and Stardust Reverie
Marisa A is Magic Sign. The main shot is a forward stream with Magic Missiles stacking on the sides as power rises. Unfocused, you still want the boss in a narrow column; the missiles do not hunt like ofuda. Focused, the lane is a drill. Sit under Patchouli, Remilia, and Flandre. If they drift, you drift. The New Classic boss marker exists so you stop shooting the wallpaper when the sprite is off the top.
Damage is the highest reliable number in the game. First clears on Normal become realistic because Stage 6 does not last long enough to drain a messy bomb stock. Extra recommendations cluster here for the same reason: Flandre has many bars and few extends, so ending a card is a life.
The cost is Stage 4. Patchouli’s element table is shot-locked, and Marisa A draws the wood line, including Wood & Fire Sign Forest Blaze. Do not discover that card on a no-continue attempt. Open Spell Practice after you have seen it, or spend Challenge Mode deaths on that fight until the spiral is boring.
Stardust Reverie, the bomb, is a spinning star you drop on the enemy. It does not shut off your shot, which is rare and important—you keep missiles online while the bomb ticks. Damage is best when the star overlaps the target, so bomb on top of a boss, not from the bottom edge as a screen wipe. It is a poor panic clear compared with Master Spark and a better execute tool. Use it to skip a Patchouli card you have not learned, or to finish a Remilia nonspell you misread, then get back to shooting.
Marisa B: Illusion Laser and Master Spark
Marisa B is Love Sign. Illusion Laser adds piercing beams beside the main shot. Unfocused, the lasers cover a bit more width; focused, they become a stab. Damage looks spectacular in screenshots and feels inconsistent in play because the beams strobe. You will have seconds of huge DPS and seconds of almost nothing, which makes timeout cards and moving bosses annoying.
Master Spark is why people still pick B. The bomb is a full-screen laser with long invulnerability. It clears bullets, converts a field of items, and lets you walk through patterns that would eat Reimu B alive. Your own shot turns off during Spark, so you are not stacking DPS; you are buying time and a vacuum. For a first Lunatic 1CC, that trade is often correct. For Extra, Spark is still a panic button, but Flandre’s health prefers the steady missiles of A.
B is the shot you take when Stage 5 knives scare you more than Patchouli’s earth line. It is also the item-collection bomb if you ever care about score: Spark on a dense fairy wave at the Point of Collection is free point-item height. Survival players should still treat Spark as a resource, not a personality. Three Sparks spent on Stage 3 kick patterns will not be there for Sakuya.
When to pick her
Pick Marisa A for a first clear if you can already track a boss and are willing to learn Forest Blaze. Pick her again for Extra if you want the community damage route. Pick Marisa B after you understand bombs and want the longest invulnerability in the four-shot roster, especially for a Lunatic 1CC. Stay off Marisa entirely on your first hour if focused movement still overshoots gaps—clear a Reimu A Easy credit first so speed is a bonus, not the teacher.
Kit-by-kit notes are on shot types. Ranked tables for first clear, Lunatic, Extra, and scoring are on the tier list. Controls belong in Getting Started if you have not finished a Normal no-continue yet.
Marisa does not unlock anyone else. She is half the playable game. Pick a letter, learn Patchouli’s element for that letter, and decide whether you want missiles that end Flandre or a Spark that forgives Stage 5.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about New Classic, Classic, shot types, and Extra Stage.
Is Marisa harder than Reimu?
She is faster and her hitbox is larger, so gaps feel tighter. Her damage is higher, so bosses are shorter. Reimu A is still the gentler stage kit.
Should beginners pick Marisa A or Marisa B?
Marisa A. Missiles are consistent. B's laser strobes, and Master Spark can hide bad bomb habits. Full kits: shot types.
Why is Marisa A recommended for Extra?
Flandre has long health and few extends. Magic Missiles cut cards down. Reimu B is the other common pick. Rankings: shot type rankings.
What is awkward about Marisa A on Stage 4?
Patchouli's spells change with your shot. Marisa A gets the wood line, including Forest Blaze. Drill it in Spell Practice or Challenge Mode before a no-continue credit.
Does Master Spark stop my shot?
Yes. Illusion Laser and the main shot cut out while Spark runs. Stardust Reverie on Marisa A does not disable the shot.
Can I unlock Marisa as a secret after beating Remilia?
No. Marisa is selectable from the start, and Extra unlocks Flandre as a boss, not as a player. The playable list stays Reimu and Marisa.
