Four different questions. A shot that is S for Extra can be B for a first Normal clear.

Rank the goal, not the sprite

Touhou Koumakyou New Classic has four shots and no evolving gear. A list that pretends there is one S-tier character is marketing. Reimu A is easy on stages and slow on Flandre. Marisa B is a Lunatic comfort bomb and a strobing Extra kit. The same letter moves a rank when the question changes.

This hub splits the questions on purpose. Shot type rankings grades Reimu A/B and Marisa A/B for first clear, Lunatic 1CC, Extra, and scoring. The difficulty guide is the other axis: Easy through Lunatic, Extra, Challenge Mode, and the resource rules that make those ranks mean anything. Kit manuals stay on shot types.

Ranks here are S, A, and B. Every shot 1CCs Lunatic. B means the kit fights you on that goal, not that you should delete it from the menu.

First clear

A first clear is any path that sees Remilia’s last card without requiring a Lunatic brain. Challenge Mode counts as seeing the game; Extra unlock does not, because unlimited lives never ask you to stop continuing. The ranking question: which kit loses fewer credits before a Normal no-continue?

That question favors coverage and a bomb that still works when you press it late. It punishes short bombs and strobing damage. It does not care about graze tables.

Lunatic 1CC

A 1CC is a single credit, no continue, limited lives. Lunatic adds density and extra cards. Rank here is survival: which bomb and which movement speed keep you alive through Sakuya and Remilia when you already know the patterns. Damage still matters because shorter cards are fewer chances to die, but Master Spark’s i-frames outweigh a DPS chart for a lot of players.

If your Lunatic deaths are Stage 5 streaming, Reimu A climbs. If they are last-card timeouts, Marisa A climbs. The published table is a default, not a diagnosis.

Extra

Extra is a different economy. No continue, few extends, a long Flandre, Patchouli as midboss. Rank here is time-to-kill plus whether homing wastes itself on familiars. Community consensus since 2002, still true in the 2026 remaster: Marisa A and Reimu B. Spell Practice exists now, so the rank is less about memorizing in full runs and more about which kit still wins when you already know QED.

Scoring

EoSD scoring is height on point items, graze, and keeping spell bonuses. Bombs that vacuum the field at the Point of Collection are worth rank points. A scoring list will disagree with a survival list on Marisa B: Spark is both the best vacuum and a bonus delete if you panic. Use the scoring column only if you are actually chasing a number.

How to use the ranks

Read the shot type rankings after you have died on a real credit, not before your first Easy clear. If Patchouli’s element line is ending your runs, that matchup outranks any S label—swap letters for one Challenge Mode session. If you cannot stream Cirno, drop to the difficulty guide until the ice shotgun is boring.

Do not average the four columns into a mega-tier. That average is how people pick Reimu B as a first shot because Extra YouTube used needles. Pick the column that matches the next run you will play.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about New Classic, Classic, shot types, and Extra Stage.

Is there a single best shot?

No. Reimu A is the usual first-clear comfort kit. Marisa B is a common Lunatic 1CC bomb kit. Marisa A and Reimu B lead Extra damage. See shot type rankings.

Do these ranks include Challenge Mode?

Challenge Mode is for learning, not ranking. Unlimited lives hide bomb mistakes. Ranks assume limited lives except where a first-clear note says otherwise.

Will a patch shuffle the list?

The four kits are the 2002 designs in a 9 September 2026 remaster. Visible hitboxes and Spell Practice change how fast you learn, not the damage tables.

Where are the character pages?

Reimu and Marisa are the playable pair. This hub only orders their letters by goal.

Should I learn scoring before Extra?

No. Unlock Extra with a Normal no-continue, then survive Flandre. Scoring is a fourth column for people who already 1CC.
