Touhou Koumakyou New Classic Two builds, one Standard purchase

1080p teaching tools versus a 2002 recreation — and who should play which.

New Classic vs Classic

Standard Touhou Koumakyou New Classic is two games. New Classic is the 2026 remaster: 1080p, ZUN rearrangements, 12 languages, and the teaching tools 2002 never had. Classic is a separate program that recreates Embodiment of Scarlet Devil as closely as 2026 hardware will allow, in Japanese only. Alliance Arts and Shanghai Alice Reprise ship both with Standard ($17.99 / ¥1,990). Deluxe ($24.63 / ¥2,966) adds the soundtrack as a third Steam item so you can listen to both scores without booting either build.

If you just installed, boot New Classic and follow Getting Started. This page is the comparison so you stop guessing which Steam icon is “the real one.” Both are real. They answer different jobs.

Graphics and presentation

New Classic upscales the playfield to 1080p and redraws sprites and backgrounds for a modern display. The HUD still reads as a Touhou 6 board: Hi Score, Score, Player, Bomb, Power (max 128), Graze, Points. Challenge Mode swaps the life stock for Infinite plus a death count. Boss markers and a visible hitbox while focused are the two presentation changes that actually change how you dodge. You see the box. You see where the boss went. Classic does not give you either.

Classic keeps the 2002 look on purpose: original UI, original character sprites, original pacing of the same six stages plus Extra. It is a second executable for players who want the old object sizes and the old lack of helpers. If you grew up on 1.02h, Classic will feel like home.

Music and languages

Every New Classic track is a ZUN rearrangement. The motifs are the Scarlet Mist Incident you know; the arrangement is 2026 ZUN. Classic uses the 2002 compositions. Deluxe’s soundtrack dump is the practical way to A/B them — more than 30 tracks spanning both. Music does not change hitboxes. It does change whether you stay in the chair.

New Classic supports 12 languages, including English, Japanese, and the other ten listed on the store page. Spell names, menus, and story text follow that list. Classic is Japanese only. If you cannot read the Classic title menu, key config, save import, and Extra unlock checks are easier to botch. Use New Classic when language is the bottleneck.

Lives, Challenge Mode, and Spell Practice

This is the mechanical split. New Classic adds Challenge Mode: unlimited lives, death counter on the HUD. Bombs and power still behave. You respawn instead of continuing. It is the correct place to learn Meiling, Sakuya, and Remilia without burning continues that would lock Extra. New Classic also adds Spell Practice, which 2002 never shipped. You can open a single card — Silent Selene, Scarlet Gensokyo, Cranberry Trap — and drill it. Combine that with the visible hitbox and boss markers and you have a teaching build.

Classic does not add those modes. Lives are the 2002 stock. There is no official spell trainer. There is no death-count sandbox. If your goal is a 1CC that feels like 2002, Classic is the board. If your goal is to reach that 1CC, New Classic is the gym. Extra still unlocks the same way: clear Stages 1–6 on Normal or higher without a continue. Easy still ends at Stage 5.

Scoring is the same core in both: point items worth more at height, a collection line at the top of the playfield, graze, spell bonuses. Original extend thresholds of 10, 20, 40, and 60 million remain the reference. Challenge Mode’s death counter is a tally, not a new rank. New Classic still changes a few patterns: hitboxes are circular (slightly more generous than Classic), Stage 3 adds extra waves that kill the old corner safespot, Remilia’s second nonspell is tighter, and you cannot premelt her last spell or Flandre’s Q.E.D. Full list: gameplay changes.

Saves, replays, and key config

Classic can import original Embodiment of Scarlet Devil 1.02h saves and replays. That is the headline for anyone who still has a 2002 folder. It also plays replays faster and offers an extra confirm-button option in key config so menu accept is not glued to shot. New Classic has Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, and the modern options set. Partial controller support on Steam New Classic means you should still open Key Config; Classic’s pad story is more complete. Full bind notes are on controls.

Treat the programs as siblings with a one-way historic import into Classic. Clear Extra in the build you actually play. Do not assume a Challenge Mode death log will appear in Classic — Classic has no such log.

Who should play which

Play New Classic if you need any of the 12 languages, a visible hitbox, boss markers, Challenge Mode, Spell Practice, or Steam achievements and Cloud. That is the first-credit build after Getting Started. Play Classic if you want 2002 object sizes with no teaching overlay, can live with Japanese menus, have 1.02h saves or replays to import, or already 1CC the game and want the old feel.

Play both if you are routing seriously. Learn a card in New Classic Spell Practice, then confirm it in Classic where the helpers are gone. The walkthrough, Remilia, and Flandre guides apply to either build; only the overlay changes. Extra unlocks and shot types do not change: Reimu A/B, Marisa A/B, same bombs.

Steam, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5. Single-player. Standard includes both versions; Deluxe adds the soundtrack. Check links for the store you own. Boot New Classic tonight if you have not cleared Stage 3. Boot Classic when you miss 2002’s unforgiving sprite.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about New Classic, Classic, shot types, and Extra Stage.

Does Standard include Classic, or do I pay twice?

Once. Standard (~$17.99 / ¥1,990) includes New Classic and Classic. Deluxe (~$24.63 / ¥2,966) adds the soundtrack. On Steam, Deluxe is a three-item bundle.

Which version has English text?

New Classic, plus 11 other languages. Classic is Japanese only. Spell names and menus in Classic will not follow your New Classic language setting.

Can Classic import my old 2002 save?

Yes. Classic can import original Embodiment of Scarlet Devil 1.02h saves and replays. Set the extra confirm button in key config before you touch file select.

Does Classic have Challenge Mode or Spell Practice?

No. Those tools are New Classic. Classic is the 2002 ruleset: limited lives, no official spell trainer, no death counter sandbox.

Will a New Classic 1CC unlock Extra in Classic?

Treat unlocks as per program. Clear Extra's condition — Normal or higher, no continue — on the build you want to play Extra in. The two executables are siblings, not one shared profile.

Which version should a new player main?

New Classic. Visible hitbox, Spell Practice, and Challenge Mode exist to teach. Move to Classic when you want the 2002 presentation, as outlined in Getting Started.
