Touhou Koumakyou New Classic Launch Notes
From the 9 June Direct to day-one Steam scores, plus what actually shipped.
Nintendo Direct, 9 June 2026
Touhou Koumakyou New Classic was announced in the Japanese Nintendo Direct on 9 June 2026. Alliance Arts and Shanghai Alice Reprise followed immediately with Steam, PlayStation 5, and Switch 2 pages. That Direct is the public start of the campaign: first official remaster of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, first console release for this title, and the first time a mainline Touhou shooter shipped with a first-party localization.
JYUNYA’s press line was practical: a generation had never played the 2002 disc on hardware that still runs it cleanly. The pitch was a legal 1080p copy with ZUN rearranging the score.
Japanese coverage dated the launch as 10 September 2026. Steam, Alliance Arts English, and Western storefronts locked 9 September 2026. Both dates describe the same worldwide window, not a delay.
Master-up and the last week
On 5 September 2026, Shanghai Alice Reprise posted a short master-up video of ZUN confirming the build was done and still aimed at the announced date. Treat it as a ship-it signal, not a patch dump.
The game then released on 9 September 2026 on Steam, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. Official spec copy still prints Thursday, 10 September 2026. Same product, different calendar labels.
Review snapshot
Shortly after launch, Steam listed New Classic as Overwhelmingly Positive, around 98% positive. Classic’s own app listed Very Positive with a smaller sample. There was no Metacritic critic cluster at launch. Use the Steam number as a day-one snapshot: legal access, readable 1080p sprites, ZUN arrangements, and Challenge Mode as a teacher. Taste complaints (arrangements vs 2002 feel) are not boot failures.
What shipped on day one
Standard edition is $17.99 / ¥1990 and includes New Classic plus Classic. Deluxe is $24.63 / ¥2966 and adds the soundtrack package. Steam Deluxe is a three-item bundle (New Classic app 4659620, Classic app 4924840, soundtrack app 4924910) at 15% off the separate prices. Switch Standard grants Classic. Steam and PlayStation 5 sell the pair as a bundle. Full SKU math is on Deluxe Edition.
New Classic features 1080p visuals, ZUN rearrangements, Spell Practice, Challenge Mode (unlimited lives plus a death counter), a visible hitbox, and boss markers. Steam lists achievements (24 at launch), Cloud, Family Sharing, partial controller support, a keyboard-only option, and adjustable difficulty. The game is single-player only on every platform.
New Classic languages: Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Italian. Classic is Japanese only and aims to recreate 2002 behavior as closely as the new code allows.
If you still need store URLs, use official links. If you have not booted the game yet, Getting Started is the better next tab than a Lunatic credit.
Community talking points (labeled as such)
Three topics dominated day-one threads. None of them are secret patches. They are also easy to overstate.
Hitbox visibility. Original Embodiment of Scarlet Devil did not show a focus hitbox. New Classic adds a visible hitbox and boss markers as an official readability change. Veterans who want the 2002 presentation can boot Classic. The marker does not rewrite spell patterns.
Translation. This is the first official localization of the Scarlet Mist Incident. Comparing official lines with decades of fan patches is expected. It is not evidence of a hidden English Classic build or a plot rewrite. New Classic is localized. Classic stays Japanese.
Classic save import. JYUNYA stated that ver 1.02h saves and replays from the 2002 game can be carried into Classic, with faster replay playback and a confirm-button option in key config. The same note said not every PC environment was tested and asked for official support reports. That is the verified claim. Do not assume a 1.00 disc or a score file from another Touhou title will import.
What this launch does not change
Extra still unlocks by clearing the six-stage story on Normal or higher without continuing. Challenge Mode can show Flandre’s patterns; it does not replace that rule. Spell Practice does not grant Extra. Deluxe does not add stages.
For routing, use the practice planner. For PC specs, use system requirements. Later patches should get their own notes rather than overwriting this Direct-to-day-one timeline.
