Touhou Koumakyou New Classic What New Classic actually changed

Teaching tools plus a short list of pattern deltas you will feel on Stage 3 and Remilia.

Gameplay Changes

Touhou Koumakyou New Classic is not only a resolution bump. Shanghai Alice Reprise rebuilt Embodiment of Scarlet Devil for 1080p, twelve languages, and modern platforms, then layered teaching tools on top. Classic, bundled in Standard, aims at 2002 behavior — including bugs they chose to keep. This page is the day-one mechanical delta list so a 1.02h veteran does not bring a dead safespot into a New Classic credit. Product split, languages, and save import stay on New Classic vs Classic.

Steam’s English reviews sit around 98 percent of about 893, with roughly 2,149 reviews across all languages — Overwhelmingly Positive on launch week. Players are already posting Lunatic no-bomb credits. Use that energy after you read the deltas.

Teaching tools (New Classic only)

  • Visible hitbox while focused, plus boss markers, taken from later Windows games.
  • Challenge Mode: unlimited lives, death counter. Bombs and power still punish mistakes.
  • Spell Practice: drill a card you have seen. 2002 never shipped this. Index on spell cards.
  • 12 languages on New Classic. Classic remains Japanese only.
  • ZUN rearrangements on the New Classic soundtrack; Classic keeps 2002 compositions.
  • 4K-ready standing portraits (multiple new patterns, with a “how ZUN-like is this” art check reported at launch).
  • Player sprites credited to Ki-san; enemy sprites to Unabara Iruka; character illustrations adapted by Curee (AQUASTYLE). That is production credit, not a gameplay change.

None of those exist as overlays in Classic. Classic instead imports 1.02h saves and replays, adds faster replay playback, and offers a confirm-button option in key config.

Pattern and engine deltas in New Classic

These are the changes that steal a credit if you play New Classic like 2002:

  1. Hitboxes are circular — equivalent to the inscribed circle of the old square hitboxes. In practice New Classic bullets are slightly smaller / more generous than Classic. A clip that kills you in Classic may graze in New Classic. Do not mix the two in one routing notebook.
  2. Stage 3 extra waves — additional enemy waves at the end of Scarlet Border ~ Scarlet Land. The common Classic corner safespot after Meiling is gone. Stream or bomb; do not park. The walkthrough calls this out in the Stage 3 section.
  3. Remilia’s second nonspell — the delay between waves is shorter. The old breath is gone. Budget a bomb or a tighter stream. See How to Beat Remilia.
  4. No premelt on last spells — you can no longer dump huge damage into Remilia’s final spell or Flandre’s Q.E.D. before the card actually declares. Wait for the name. Flandre routing is on How to Beat Flandre.
  5. Safespots that still work — Eternal Meek and Starbow Break safespots remain usable. Copy those; do not copy Stage 3’s dead corner.

What they deliberately did not “fix”

Reporting around the rebuild says the team kept as much original behavior as possible, including restoring some bugs that later patches had cleaned, because New Classic is built around ZUN’s original program as the core. Classic is the closer museum piece. If a 2002 trick still works in Classic and fails in New Classic, trust this list first, then the pause menu’s practice tools.

The original source code for 2002 was lost; that is why this is a rebuild rather than a simple Steam wrap. Year-2038 issues that haunt other early Windows Touhou titles are exactly the class of problem Reprise is trying to get off modern PCs by shipping a new executable.

How to use this page

  • New player: ignore Classic until after a Normal 1CC in New Classic. Start at Getting Started and How to 1CC.
  • 1.02h veteran: read Stage 3 extra waves and the premelt block before your first New Classic credit. Then decide whether Classic is the board you actually want.
  • Scorer: circular bullets change graze. Confirm on one build. Scoring explains the HUD.

No day-one patch number has replaced this list as of 10 September 2026. When Alliance Arts or Shanghai Alice Reprise posts a numbered patch, this hub’s launch notes will point at it. Until then, treat the five deltas above as the live ruleset for New Classic.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about New Classic, Classic, shot types, and Extra Stage.

Are New Classic bullets the same size as 2002?

No. Hitboxes are circular, inscribed in the old squares, so bullets play slightly smaller than Classic.

Why did my Stage 3 corner safespot die?

New Classic adds extra waves at the end of Stage 3. The Classic corner is gone. See the walkthrough.

Can I still premelt Q.E.D.?

No. New Classic blocks premature damage on Remilia's last spell and Flandre's Q.E.D. before declaration.

Which safespots still work?

Eternal Meek and Starbow Break safespots are still usable. Do not trust the old Stage 3 corner.
